What Is Rosacea and How Do I Treat It?
Rosacea is a chronic condition commonly characterized by facial erythema, or redness. It is typically a harmless cosmetic condition with treatment usually involving medications to reduce inflammation. Rosacea begins with redness across the cheeks, nose or forehead, but can also less commonly affect the neck, chest, ears and scalp. In more severe cases, additional symptoms, such as semi-permanent redness, small bumps, pimples, red gritty eyes, burning and stinging sensations, and in some advanced cases, a red lobulated nose, may occur.
There are a few hypotheses for the cause of rosacea, but nothing has been scientifically confirmed. A recent study supported the hypothesis that rosacea is a neurological disorder, resulting from hyper-sensitization of sensory neurons due to exposure to intestinal bacteria in the digestive tract. Other studies have revealed that some people with rosacea have increased numbers of demodex mites, especially those with steroid induced rosacea.
Triggers that cause episodes of flushing and blushing also play a part in the development of rosacea. Exposure to temperature extremes as well as strenuous exercise, heat from sunlight, severe sunburn, stress, anxiety, cold wind, and moving to a warm or hot environment from a cold one can also act as triggers. Some food and drinks can trigger flushing as well, such as alcohol, caffeine, foods high in histamines and spicy foods.
Most people with rosacea have only mild redness and are never formally diagnosed or treated. In many cases, a visual inspection by a trained medical provider is sufficient for diagnosis. Treating rosacea varies from patient to patient, depending upon the severity of the condition. In almost all cases, a topical treatment recommended by dermatologists will help resolve the condition for a long time, or send it into permanent remission. There are several non-prescription strength products on the market that help to minimize the redness associated with rosacea.
