QUESTION: I started using Cosmelan 2 two days ago at night time. The cream has caused redness, itchiness, and swelling to my face. Is this normal - especially the swelling?
D'LYNN’S ANSWER: Redness, swelling, itchiness, and in some instances peeling, are common when you start using Cosmelan 2. If you are using the product only once per day and any of your symptoms are too uncomfortable, you probably need to alternate days until your skin acclimates. Also, avoid using any other products on your face until your symptoms subside, as some other ingredients may be causing irritation.
The itchiness is caused by the dryness of your skin. If the itching is unbearable, you can try an antihistamine such as Benadryl for relief. If itching is severe or you develop a rash (redness spreading beyond where your product was applied) you may be having an adverse reaction and should discontinue using the product entirely.
If Cosmelan 2 seems to be too harsh for your skin, you may want to consider a more gentle brightening cream. I recommend Caliderma Brightening Cream.
If any of the symptoms persist, particularly after backing off of the product, you may want to visit your dermatologist.
